The increasing complexity of unconventional oil and gas plays is driving the development of tools and technologies that go beyond the limits of conventional methods, enhancing greater efficiency and reliability in drilling well paths that optimize recovery and maximize economics. The improved ability to effectively place and design wells in unconventional formations has been made possible through greater reservoir understanding. The process involves studying the geome-chanical behavior of the reservoir and surrounding formations regarding the evolving stress profile, petrophysical properties, and the migration and maturation of hydrocarbons. Operators have learned over the years that these conditions vary significantly in a given reservoir, even between adjacent offset wells, compromising the operational efficiency of conventional tools and methods.
