A 63-year-old man presented at the emergency department with sudden onset of a sore throat and expectoration of reddish sputum after consuming medicine that had been administered by his caretaker. He had recently been diagnosed with extensive-stage small-cell lung cancer that had metastasized to multiple mediastinal lymph nodes, the liver, and bones (T4N3M1). He had had a productive cough for 1 month and a history of recurrent aspiration owing to recurrent laryngeal nerve involvement, due to the lung cancer.
