Can Alveolar Macrophages Made from Stem Cells Achieve Functional Rescue of Lung Diseases?

In this issue of the Journal, the article by Litvak and colleagues (pp. 1219-1229) is noteworthy because it introduces the novel and exciting possibility that alveolar macrophage (AM) can be derived from various kinds of stem cells. This implies that they could be used translationally to promote recovery from airway diseases in which AM deficiency plays a prominent role (1).
