Alexandra Schachter (Symonds) was born on November 23, 1918, in Brooklyn. She earned her bachelor's degree from New York university in 1940, her master's in psychology from the University of Wisconsin, Madi- son, in 1944, and her medical degree from New York medical College in 1948. While in the Public Health Service, she interned at the Staten Island u.S. Marine hospital. She completed a year of internal medicine, then a year of neuropsychiatry at the Ellis lsland U.S. Marine Hospital, and two years of psychiatry at Bellevue Hospital.
