I am grateful to The American Journal of Psychoanalysis for this opportunity to respond to two recent, similar reviews by Richard C. Friedman (1999; 2000) of my book, Psychoanalytic therapy and the Gay Man (PT&TGM). I appreciate that he acknowledges my "empathic, thoughtful posture toward gay patients' (in press) and calls me a "thoughtful clinician" (1999, p.654). Nevertheless, friedman also main- tains that PT&TGM is a polemical and political book, rather than a clinically or scientifically reasoned one.
