When you get a machine saw to chop short lengths off the end of a tube, the bits will drop to the floor and bounce. Where they bounce to will depend on the angle at which they hit the floor, the height of the saw, and any bumps on the floor or burrs on the cut end. In short, it depends on physics. Take another example. You're a pork pie maker, and you want to automate the transfer of individual pies from conveyor to wrapping station by picking them up by robot. But pork pies, good ones, have pastry of a unique consistency that shears rather than adheres to itself. And what you don't want is decapitated pies. Programming the required delicate touch into your robot is all a matter of physics again.
