摘要

They are just part of the furniture to most of us driving along a motorway or main road. Crash barriers, lining the nearside and marking the central reservation, are just an everyday sight while driving. Their purpose is obvious, but are they really up to the job? How were they designed and tested? Can what appears to be a thin, stumpy metal rail really stop, say, a 30-tonne lorry crossing the central reservation into the path of oncoming traffic?
