London has some of the worst air quality in the whole of Europe. It might not rival the choking pea-soupers of yesteryear, hut on some had days there is a discernible haze hanging above the capital. This doesn't make for a pleasant environment for those who live in, work in and visit London. Indeed, the situation can prove positively lethal. It is estimated that every year 1,000 premature deaths and a similar number of hospital admissions occur owing to poor air quality. Those are unacceptable statistics for a modern city with green aspirations.
