The next chief executive of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers already has answers to the inevitable question she will face. Shouldn't the head of the IMechE, Ruth Spellman will be asked, be an engineer herself? Spellman takes a deep breath. "Well, for one thing," she says, "a lot of the time the job is about presenting engineering to non-engineers, so an external perspective will be useful. Second, I've worked with engineers all my adult life and I've worked with a wide variety of engineering bodies too. I know the value of the logical approach engineers often take."
