Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: The road traveled and the road ahead

As we learn more about lisdexamfetamine, the latest addition to the arsenal of medications used for the treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), it is a good time to reflect upon this disorder and its treatment. We know that ADHD is a genuine, neurobiological disorder that results in functional impairment of daily activities due to hyperactivity and inattention. This set of symptoms can be evaluated using various subjective scoring tools and input from family members and caregivers. We know that ADHD is one of the most common chronic disorders in children. We know that the mainstay of treatment is pharmacologic in the form of stimulant therapy, mainly amphetamine derivatives.
