The second edition of this book updates methods andnapplications that have proven to be valuable in conductingnmodern biomedical research. Its overarching goal is to pro-nvide information and examples to help train biomedicalnresearchers in the novel biostatistical methods that havenblossomed over the past 40 years in response to newncomplexities and ever-larger data sets. Use of novel bio-nstatistical methods has been facilitated by the growth ofncomputational systems, including widely used softwarenpackages. Another key focus is the application of ‘‘datanmining’’ tools, which assist exploration of complex bio-nmedical data sets with the goal of identifying interestingncross-variable associations as well as developing new hy-npotheses and directions for future research. This book isnintended not to ‘‘scare’’ biomedical researchers with com-nplex equations but to focus on 1) understanding model as-nsumptions and whether these assumptions are met with theninvestigator’s data and 2) selecting the best model and prop-nerly interpreting the results. The statistical software used innthe text applications and examples is Stata, version 10
