摘要

Economists and historians generally agree on the considerable value of investigating longterm trends and differences in the standard of living or quality of life. They have displayed ingenuity in estimating and analyzing GNP and life expectancy for many countries back to the 19th century (or earlier, in a few cases). Using height data from military records and other sources, anthropometric historians have extended the study of health aspects of the standard of living into the 18th century.
