Profiles in Ceramics: William H. McCracken

From the coal towns of Pennsylvania to the magnesite deposits of northeastern Brazil to the bauxite fields of Alabama-where he became known as Bauxite Bill-to the copper world of Peru, William (Bill) McCracken has left his imprint on refractory raw materials in the world of ceramics. This imprint is as far reaching as the mines may be deep-not only into the world of science and discovery of ceramics and beyond, but also into the daily lives of people all across the world. For without refractories, McCracken told the ALAFAR XXVII Congress last year, there would be only primitive life, no restrooms, no hotels, no beds, clothing or dishes, no cars or other forms of transportation, no modern world of technology or convenience.
