Strain concentrations in notched laminates under bending

Three types of finite element models were constructed: one consisting of shell elements without transverse shear effects (KPT shell), one consisting of shell elements with transverse shear effects (RPT shell), and one consisting of quadratic 3D continuum solid elements (3D solid) with two elements through the thickness of each ply (using more than two elements through the thickness of each ply was found to have negligible effect of the solution).
