At press time a bankruptcy filing by Japan Airlines was seen as imminent under Japan's Corporate Rehabilitation Law as American Airlines and Delta Air Lines continued to jockey to be selected to provide an equity stake in the carrier.rnOn Jan. 13, Kazuo Inamori, one of Japan's most prominent business figures, accepted Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama's offer to become CEO of JAL when the company enters bankruptcy. JAL President Haruka Nishimatsu, who had expressed misgivings about a bankruptcy filing, was expected to step down. Inamori, 77, founded Kyocera Corp. in 1959 and built it into a premier high-tech company manufacturing a range of products including cell phones and solar power equipment. In 1984 he founded KDDI, now Japan's second-largest telecommunications provider.
