On August 29, 2003, EPA issued a final, signed version of the maximum achievable control technology (MACT) standards for new and existing iron and steel foundries. The MACT standards for iron and steel foundries will be codified in 40 CFR Part 63, Subpart EEEEE. Although signed August 29, 2003, as of January 15, 2003, the final standards had not yet been published in the Federal Register. The MACT standards establish emission limits for sources within metal casting departments and core and mold making departments at iron and steel foundries that are major sources of hazardous air pollutants (HAPs). The new MACT standards are expected to apply to about 100 iron and steel foundries, and are estimated to reduce HAP emissions by more than 820 tons per year (tpy) and particulate matter (PM) and volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions by about 2,550 tpy. Additionally, mercury emissions are expected to be reduced by about 80%.
