Aeronautical Engineers Inc (AEI) flew its first McDonnell Douglas MD-80SF passenger-to-freighter (P2F) conversion on September 28 from Miami, Florida. Former American Airlines MD-82 N73444 (c 49470) was converted by AEI as the first of the 'special freighter' family. The company is the first to offer freighter conversions of the MD-80 series. A 7ft Tin (2.16m) by 11ft 4in (3.45m) cargo door has been installed in the port side of the forward fuselage and the cabin modified as a Class E cargo compartment. The aircraft can carry up to a dozen 7ft 4in (2.24m) x 9ft Oin (2.74m), eight 10ft 5in (3.17m) x 7ft 4in (2.24m), or eight 10ft 5in (3.17m) x 8ft Oin (2.44m) unit load devices. The flight test programme is expected to be brief, as the modifications have not altered the former airliner's basic performance.
