Vostochnyy Airport May Be Opened to NATO

Russia is considering making Vostochnyy Airport in Ulyanovsk available to NATO as a cargo handling centre for flights to and from Afghanistan. The proposal would come into effect as the Afghan National Security Forces assume primary responsibility for their own security in 2014. NATO initially asked Russia to consider allowing transit of non-lethal cargo through its territory in May 2011.
