Africa remains the most dangerous place in the world in terms of air crashes, in spite of a 56% improvement in hull loss rates. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the hull loss rate for Western-built airliners in Africa dropped from 18 in 2010 to eight in 2011. This is in line with a trend making 2011 the safest in global aviation history. Africa remains a risky area to fly in due to lack of infrastructure and insufficient government regulation of the industry.
