RAF Brize Norton Hosts NATO Flypast Participants

Dozens of NATO aircraft performed a flypast for government heads of the 28 member states and senior dignitaries at its 2014 summit. The NATO member nation aircraft flew over the political gathering at Celtic Manor in Newport, Wales at 0900hrs on September 5. The centre of activity leading up to the occasion was RAF Brize Norton, Oxfordshire, where fast jets from NATO nations gathered from September 1. Participating nations and aircraft were Canada (McDonnell Douglas CF-18 Hornet), Denmark (F-16 fighting Falcon), France (Dassault Mirage 2000C), Germany (Eurofighter EF2000), Netherlands (F-16), Poland (Mikoyan MiG-29 Fulcrum), Portugal (F-16), UK (Typhoon, Airbus Voyager, and BAe Hawk, plus the nine of the Red Arrows) and the United States (Boeing F-15E Strike Eagle). The Dutch F-16S, RAF Typhoons and US Air Force F-15Es all operated from home bases while the remaining fast jets and supporting transport aircraft gathered at RAF Brize Norton. Each country sent two aircraft to the base except Poland, which sent three MiG-29As of 1 Eskadra Lotnictwa Taktycznego (1 .elt) 'Warszawa' from Minsk Mazowiecki AB. A practice for the event on September 3involved two Polish MiG-29As and one aircraft from each of the other nations. The final participants departed the Oxfordshire base on September 8.
