Atlantic Star's St Helena Link

A new airline is planning to start operations between London and the British Overseas Territory of St Helena. Atlantic Star Airlines will use a Boeing 757-200 to fly tourists and cargo that currently travel by ship to the remote island in the South Atlantic Ocean. Meanwhile an airport is under construction near the capital, Jamestown, in the north of the island. The service could be provided on behalf of the airline by Icelandair subsidiary Loftleidir under an aircraft, crew, maintenance and insurance arrangement. The 757 was selected for its mix of passenger and cargo capacity, the range to fly to and from Europe and airfield performance to operate from the relatively short 5,414ft (1,650m) runway at the new airport. A weekly service is planned for early 2016 following the completion of the airport, but the start depends on Atlantic Star acquiring the rights to the route from the UK Government and certification of the landing field.
