Air Canada Survival, Innovation & All That Jazz

In the air transport recession exacerbated by the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) epidemic there were many casualties, among them a number of long-established major airlines. The flag carriers of a number of small nations were among those (hat collapsed, including Belgium's Sabena, Swissair and Balkan Bulgarian. Air Canada, despite serving a similarly small population, went into bankruptcy protection but survived. This may have been due to Canada's huge size and the vast distances between its major cities which has always encouraged air transport and it may have reflected Canada's long and proud history of air-mindedness, but it was also due to Air Canada's own efforts. Despite a conservative image, Air Canada has always been willing to embrace change and has experimented with regional and low-cost services, while maintaining the high standards that saw it being recognised as the 'Best North American Airline' in the 2005 World Airline Awards.
