Biggin hill airfield was opeded originally as a militaryrncommunications centre in 1917.It was soon re-designatedrnas a flying station and its aircraft quickly became involvedrnin the defence of London.In World War Two,a similar role wouldrntransform it into a household name that edures to this day.rnIn terms of flights,the airfield has been a purely civilrnoperation since 1958,but the RAF did have a non-flyingrnpresence here until 1987.For that reason,it wasn't until thern1970s that Bromley Council purchased the airfield from thernMinistry of Defence for ￡460,000-around ￡3.3 million inrntoday's terms.
