摘要

We believe that the papers in this special issue give a good overview of the current directions in research on solving environmental problems by using techniques from Artificial Intelligence. They are of interest for both the environmental research and AI community. For the environmental research community the papers demonstrate that AI techniques can be effectively used to solve their problems, in most cases with a lower complexity than the mathematical methods (see, e.g., the Ants' Garden model). For the AI community the papers present new applications, new challenges and new problem domains that are different to others in some respects and require new solutions, e.g., the combination of several AI techniques coming from different areas. We hope that the future will bring new editions of the Workshop on Binding Environmental Sciences and Artificial Intelligence (BESAI) as we foresee this area as one of the most attractive in the AI field.
