French Caribbean organizations and the ‘Black question’ in France

The rise of French Caribbean organizers of protests in the last decade in mainland France raising issues such as the memory of slavery and discrimination, unveiled strategies of (re)presentation of the group that made various and alternate uses of race and ethnicity (‘Ultramarins’, from the French Overseas Departments, ‘Caribbean’, ‘Afro Caribbean’, ‘Minorities’, ‘French citizens’). The creation of a Federation of Black Associations (the CRAN) in 2005 disrupted the field of French Caribbean organizing by reducing the spectrum of labels of self-identification available in the public arena. How did it modify the strategies, discourses, and practices of French Caribbean activists? How did it impact the forms of their relationships with French institutions?
