The closure of Algerian airspace to French militaryaircraft on 2 October is chiefly symbolic; it will have onlya marginal impact on the France's Operation Barkhane'sair sorties. Most military planes flying over Algeria are intransit, and are mainly wide-bodied aircraft with a longrange, allowing for last minute ajustments to their flightroutes. The recent ban has therefore not had much of anoperational impact on these flights, which have only hadto a make a slight detour either to the west over Moroccoand Mauritania, or to the east over Libya and then Nigerto avoid flying over Algeria.
