Spy's murder drives a wedge between Luanda and Moscow

Leonid Sartov had officially been posted to Angola as the second secretary at the Russian embassy in Luanda, where he arrived in June after five years representing his homeland in Algiers. But when he was murdered in his home in the Alvalade district of the Angolan capital on the night of 27 December, the Russian diplomatic corps was forced to disclose his true credentials to the Angolan police: Sartov was a colonel of the SVR, Russia's external intelligence service.
