Mines minister Vetah counting on successful Tasiast gold talks with Kinross to stay in government

Talks between Nouakchott and Canada's Kinross Gold Corp on the future of the Tasiast gold mine in western Mauritania ended in mid-June with a number of major gains for the Mauritanian state. The man mainly responsible for these gains was Minister of Petroleum and Mines Mohamed Ould Abdel Vetah. He succeeded in relaunching and speeding up the talks with Kinross following years of strained relations. Most importantly, however, the minister used all his weight to force the Canadian group to accept major concessions.
