More than half the money that Rolls-Royce invests every year in research and development is used to develop environmentally friendly products, covering not only CO_2 and NOx technologies (some sources estimate that 3% of global man-made emissions are attributable to aircraft) but also the reduction of noise, said Colin Smith, Director, Engineering and Technology. Detailing the company's current technology priorities, he said that in excess of $500 million of the R&D budget is spent on new development programs that stretch over the next 15 years.
