Too late in life, I came to realize that I could learn something from every person I interacted with (even the unlikeliest of sources). In fact, some of my best lessons came from my worst bosses, including how not to treat people and how not to handle a performance review. Of course, life lessons, guidance, and advice come from more traditional sources as well, and they have been bombarding most of us since we could first understand (and probably before). My mother had some interesting words of wisdom, two of which were my favorites: "Don't drive with your arm out the window" and "Wear your hat in the winter so your body heat doesn't escape." To this day, you will never see me driving a car with my arm out the window (the modern convenience of air conditioning has certainly helped here). But I still cannot deny that I loathe hats.
