The May (and September) issue of Aerospace Engineering has been traditionally devoted to editorial focuses that include manufacturing processes and material technologies in the industry. This issue is no different, with a Tech Focus department devoted to manufacturing and materials, as well as several articles. One particular commodity not always thought of in terms of being a material is fuel, the cost of which is one of the primary reasons for the financial woes of the airline industry. The effects of fuel costs over the past couple of years of course go well beyond just the airline industry. Rumblings of gasoline boycotts are one reflection of consumer frustration, other rumblings include the need to "reduce our dependence on imported oil" and the need to "focus on renewable fuels."
