Part identification and traceability have become increasingly important for the aerospace industry, in which safety is an overriding priority. It is generally accepted that a highly effective way to ensure complete traceability is to directly mark a part with a machine-readable code and track it through its entire lifecycle, a method known as Direct Part Marking (DPM) or Machine Readable Identification (MRI).
