Not long afrer joining the Imperial German Army Air Service in 1917, Gustav Lachmann suffered a stall/spin accident during training. While in hospital, he pondered what had happened to him, and how to prevent it, undertaking crude experiments with the help of models and cigarette smoke. He postulated that a cascade of aerofoils within a wing section would be the answer and, when demobilised, borrowed some money to have a model constructed and tested. It was successful, but the German Patent Office would only accept full-scale evidence, which he was not able to supply. When he heard of FHP's patent for a similar device, the two of them got together and collaborated. Lachmann became a consultant to the firm, and H.P. paid him to study at Gottingen.
