George Rudolph Volkert

Volkert was a student of FHP when the latter ran a course in Aeronautical Engineering at the Northampton Institute in Clerkenwell in 1912. When Volkert qualified, FHP offered him a job as a designer, which he accepted. On his arrival at Cricklewood, however, Volkertrndiscovered that he was not a designer - he was the designer. He was officially appointed "chief designer" in 1914, incharge of all H.P. aircraft until March 1921, when he was seconded to the Sempill Mission to Japan for two years. He returned as H.P. chief designer in 1923, finally retiringfrom full-time duties in 1945 owingto ill health, although he returned in a part-time capacity as technical director for the later Handley Page (Reading) subsidiary.
