March 5,2011, marks the 75th anniversary of the first flight of Supermarine Spitfire prototype K5054. Here we look at how its appearance in the New Types Park at Hendon on June 27, 1936, was reported in the July 1 issue of The Aeroplane. Editor C.G. Grey wrote in his lengthy generalised report on the RAF Display: "The New Types Park was no longer the Amusement Park [nicknamed so due to the regular appearance of 'technical curiosities' - Ed]. All the inmates were serious and some of them were quite new - albeit of types which we were advocating years back. One could not help remarking that our latest war-machines in the air look remarkably like Percival Gulls and Miles Hawks of four or five years ago - except that they tuck up their trousers.
