It started in December 1928 when Monocoupe 60 G-AADG, a two-seat cabin monoplane, formerly NC6751, with a 60 h.p. Velie radial engine was imported and soon re-engined with an 80 h.p. Armstrong Siddeley Genet. Although it survived the war it was broken up at Gatwick in 1947 alongside Porterfield G-AEOF, of which more later. The only other British Monocoupe was a type 90, G-ABBR, imported from Germany ex D-2609 in June 1930. It returned there in July 1933 but was destroyed in November that year. Monocoupes were built in a number of versions and were very popular in America, priced originally at $2,675. A single Ryan Brougham, G-AAEK, was imported by the Irvin Air Chute Company in June 1929. This was a close relative of the Ryan NYP in which Charles Lindbergh had flown the Atlantic the previous month and had a 300 h.p. Wright Whirlwind engine. It was a six-seater but since its American Certificate of Airworthiness was not validated here it was broken up in 1933.
