It was more than a year before the Mitchell saw combat following its entry into service in February 1941. However, it was not long before NAA's medium twin-engined bomber was making an impression on its crews and, more importantly, the enemy. The first of the24B-25s (40-2165 to 40-2188) built were delivered to the 17th BG at McChord Field, Washington, in February 1941. The first examples were assigned to the 34th Bomb (HQ) Sqn and once deliveries had been completed the unit had received 19 of the 24 built. Most of these early aircraft were employed by the 17th BG as coastal patrol aircraft prior to the USA's entry into the war.
