摘要

I wonder how many readers can remember seeing lots of Spitfires in the early 1950s awaiting refurbishment outside the Airwork hangars at Gatwick, or the company's base at Blackbushe from 1947 for overhaul and operations, but these are only the tips of the Airwork story. The company was founded in 1928 by Alan Muntz and Nigel Norman with a fairly wide-ranging description which included aircraft dealership. An Airwork School of Flying was established at Heston, Airwork's first base, there was work on aero-engines and during the war the company designed the airborne searchlight, the Turbinlite, for night-fighting use in the Douglas Havoc. Airwork soon spread itself around the country, while there was a considerable amount of work overseas. Details of involvement in Saudi Arabia between 1963 and 1973 make interesting reading - it was not all plain sailing and the unfortunate situation in the 1992 contract for modifications to Tornados was widely covered by the media at the time, casting a shadow over the company.
