XPath Expressions for XML Documents

Visual FoxPro 9 adds XPath expressions to XMLAdapter objects such as XMLTable and XMLField. XPath is a language, used mainly by Extensible Style sheet Language Transformations (XSLT) and XPointer, for referring to portions of an XML document. You can use XSLT to transform the document sections into other XML documents or even other types of documents. XPointer is a technology based on XPath you can use to target a section of an XML document not for transformations, but for usage. The XPath language is similar to the old DOS syntax you might have used to navigate directory structures (now called folders) in DOS and UNIX. For example, the syntax .. refers to an XML node one above the currently selected node and Namel/Name2 refers to the location called Name2 found beneath Namel.
