Coating and laminating:Coats joins Fulcrum to develop nanotube-enhanced yarns and fabrics

Textile products that are enhanced by carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are the goal of a two-year agreement between an Israel-based specialist in nanotechnology, Fulcrum SP Materials Ltd of Rehovot,and a UK company that focuses on industrial thread, Coats Pic of Uxbridge. Fulcrum has developed a method for bonding CNTs to carbon and aramid fabrics using SPI proteins produced via bacterial fermentation.The company says it has now assembled a library of genetically modified SPI proteins tailored to bind a variety of compounds and materials, including gold, silicon oxide, titanium oxide and CNTs.
