Montefibre Carbon to produce strong carbon fibre following investment

Montefibre Carbon is to invest € 16.2 million to establish a line for the production of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) precursor and construct a carbonisation line at its plant in Miranda de Ebro, Spain. The former will be used to produce a precursor for what the company describes as "semi-aerospace"-grade carbon fibre. This carbon fibre will have a tensile strength of 4.8 GPa (700 kilopounds per square inch) and will be sold under the name M700. The carbonisation line will have a capacity of 100 t a year, will be able to process fibres with filament counts of 80—480 k, and will be used initially by Montefibre Carbon to develop and demonstrate its technologies for the manufacture of carbon fibre. The carbonization line will be operational by the end of 2021. The carbonisation line will be the first to be owned by a Spanish company and the second to be installed in Spain (following the line built by Hexcel in Illescas in 2008). Further, Montefibre Carbon will become the third-largest European producer of carbon fibre (after SGL of Wiesbaden, Germany, and Solvay of Brussels, Belgium)—even though it will only be operating at a demonstration level.
