Colloidal particles assembled into structures with long-range order have been the focus of interest for researchers from a broad range of specialties, because they are models of self-assembling systems and offer a myriad of potential applications. One application area is in the field of photonic materials, in which three-dimensional dielectric structures exhibiting a periodicity comparable to the wavelength of light can result in the inhibition of photon propagation for a certain band of frequencies.
