Supramolecular Assemblies of Different Carbon Nanotubes for Photoconversion Processes

Nanometer-scale structures are exceptional systems for testing fundamental ideas about the roles of dimensionality and confinement in materials, composites, and novel electronic devices of greatly reduced size.[1] Carbon nanotubes (CNTs)[2] are a new form of carbon, configurationally equivalent to a two-dimensional graphene sheet rolled into a tube. In the resulting CNTs, the direction in which the sheet is rolled up determines their electronic properties. While their diameters are typically in the range of nanometers, individual CNTs reach lengths of up to 4 cm leading to high aspect ratios. Features such as unusual strength,[3] unique electrical properties,[3c,4] and efficient conduction of heat[5] have generated strong interest in their possible use in nanoelectronic and nanomechanical applications.[3c] Notably, the conductivity of CNTs vary between semiconducting and metallic and depends, in large, on the chiral angle of the tubes and their diameter.
