Molecular electronics and the integration of organic semiconductors into devices both fundamentally involve implementing and characterizing functional electronic interfaces. Creating these interfaces is a challenge, but also includes the opportunity to incorporate functions that are not readily available in inorganic structures, where the range of available materials is much smaller. The properties of organic electronic materials span the range of semiconducting, metallic, and insulating behaviors. This range alone, for example, raises the possibility of electronic devices constructed from organic electronic materials alone.
