Ceria, CeO_2, forms a component of a number of catalyst systems of current technological and industrial importance, including automotive three-way catalytic converters, electrodes in solid-oxide fuels cells, and as water gas shift catalysts for the production and purification of hydrogen from water and carbon monoxide. These applications rely on the oxygen storage capacity of ceria, a property that arises from the ability of cerium to interconvert between the +4 and +3 oxidation states at moderate temperatures (< 600℃) in the solid state. In the continued development of catalysts with optimized properties, particularly given the drive for new de-pollution catalysts and catalysts for the production of pure hydrogen for future energy sources, the introduction of dopant metals into ceria has been widely studied in the past few years.
