At the beginning of 20th century, the first linear polarizer, produced from oriented synthetic polymers (polyvinyl alcohol; PVA) containing dichroic dyes such as iodine, was invented by Land et al. They have been widely used in antiglare sunglasses, photography filters, optical instruments, and flat-panel displays. As these polarizers are based on an absorbing mechanism, at least fifty percent of the incident light is absorbed and transferred into thermal energy. Therefore, this type of polarizer has a limited light-transmission efficiency and produces excessive heat when irradiated with strong light, restricting its application to flat-panel displays.
