Stem cells offer great potential as therapeutic agents provided that efficient methods are available to induce tissue specificity. Multipotent mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have received particular attention in cartilage and bone repair due to their relative ease of isolation, potential for expansion and apparent lack of immunogenicity. As these cells are anchorage dependent, current approaches to MSC-directed tissue engineering involve the modification of substrates to provide structural and chemical guidance for subsequent tissue formation.
