Ceramic-Polymer Composites with High Dielectric Constant

Dielectric materials with a high dielectric constants are widely required for applications such as bypass capacitors in microelectronics and energy-storage devices. Generally speaking, ceramics, especially ferroelectric ceramics, have a high dielectric constant but are brittle and have a low dielectric strength, whereas polymers are flexible and easy to process and have a high dielectric strength but have a very small dielectric constant (i.e., < 10). Therefore, a great deal of effort has gone into the development of ceramic-polymer 0-3 composites, which are formed by suspending 0-dimensional ceramic powders into a 3-dimensional continuative polymer matrix. The created composites combine the advantages of ceramics and polymers, and represent a novel type of material that is flexible and easy to process, and is of relatively high dielectric constant and high breakdown strength.
