摘要

Testing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in exhaled breath is currently being investigated as a potentially useful method for detecting cancer. The cellular biochemical processes associated with cancer cause subtle metabolomic changes by (i) producing certain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are not present in a healthy person, and by (ii) changing the relative concentration levels of a wide variety of cancer-related VOCs. The cancer-related VOCs differ from those of a healthy person mostly in nmol/1 -pmol/1 (ppb-ppt) concentrations of C_4-C_(11) straight or monomethylated alkanes and some benzene derivatives.
