For regenerative medical applications such as tissue engineering and drug delivery, bioactive hydrogel systems have to fulfil an impressive list of requirements. Different methods of incorporation of bioactive compounds such as peptides and drugs have been explored, including physical entrapment, chemical cross-linking, and specific binding Importantly, they interact with the natural environment they are brought into and therefore have to demonstrate a certain complexity, adaptivity and nonlinear behavior.
